There has been constant myth or rumors floating around. In fact when I recommended my mom to install RO water purifier in our home, the immediate question she asked is ‘Is Ro water safe and good for health?’ and ‘what are the benefits of RO water?’ She added that she had heard people saying RO water doesn’t have any minerals needed for our health. I did not have enough facts to explain my mom at that time. And Hence I have come up with this article. So, this article is an attempt to uncover the truth based on experimentation done and bring out the facts about RO water. I hope this article will provide enough clarify on RO water. Why is RO Purifier safe and effective filter?

Couple of decades back, our water bodies were in good state and they were largely safe for consumption. We know what happened later. The population increase lead to exploitation of water, and on top of that industrial activities and IT revolution in the cities lead to polluted water. The water is no more safe and good for health. In Metros, the TDS of the water will be easily over 500 PPM.

Water with TDS of over 1500 PPM was kept in mud pot for a day. The next day when the TDS of water in mud pot was checked, the TDS did not change. However the temperature of water in mud pot has reduced as expected. The reason is some of the water tried to come out through pores in the pot and it absorbs heat and evaporates. That’s why, mud pot water has low temperature leading to cooling water. Therefore, water kept in mud pot will not have any impact on TDS.

Ceramic filter

Water kept in ceramic filter for a day. The next day the TDS level of water will be reduced a bit but not to the acceptable limits (less than 500 PM). This happens because the size of pores in the ceramic filter is around 900 micrometer. Hence, it filters certain impurities but it cannot filter Virus and Heavy metals. Hence, ceramic filter is not effective for high TDS water.

Copper vessel

when water kept in copper vessel for a day, it doesn’t impact TDS of the water. It just remains the same. Then why people say drinking water in copper vessel is good for health? It is because, when water is kept in copper vessel, copper gets added to water and it is good for health. And not just that, these copper ions react with jaundice and Diarrhea causing micro-organisms and kill them. The downside of water in copper vessel is the green sediment. This green sediment is nothing but copper carbonate.  This copper carbonate is formed due to chemical reaction between copper, water and air. This copper carbonate gets settled at the bottom. That’s why, the copper vessel has to be cleaned properly, especially at the bottom. However, the cleaning is almost impossible for copper water bottle. It is obvious that our hand cannot even reach the bottom. Therefore, it will be difficult to remove those sediments in copper water bottle. Since copper carbonate is not good for health, drinking water using copper water bottle is not recommended. Please note that copper vessel did not reduce TDS level. The High TDS level water  is processed using RO purifier. The resultant RO water will have very low TDS (around 40 PPM). This is because the pores in the RO water purifier is 0.001 micrometer and it can eliminate all kind of impurities, microorganisms, heavy metals etc. In short, RO water purifier is the effective way to filter high TDS water. Myth: RO water is acidic and hence not safe.

Truth: Water is considered to be neutral if the pH value is 7. Water is termed to be acidic if pH is less than 7 and basic if pH greater than 7. When we test the pH value of RO water, it was 7.4 before RO process and it ended up in 5.8 after RO purification. Hence RO water will be acidic. This is because RO purifier removes calcium, Magnesium and potassium from the water. Hence this mineral deprived RO water will react with co2 and becomes acidic. The minerals if present in RO water will prevent this chemical reaction. So, RO water is bit acidic.

RO water is slightly acidic. But, Is RO water dangerous and not safe and good for health? This is the important question. Big No. The food items we eat have different pH. Some food items are acidic in nature. For eg: Lemon juice pH value will be well below 4 PPM. However, it is not dangerous. Because the food we eat or drink get diluted with blood. After getting mixed with our blood, our kidney does acid-based balancing. Therefore, irrespective of pH in the food, our body organs do acid-based balancing to maintain the pH level in the blood. To add further, even pH in the rain water is around 5.3 and makes it acidic. In certain regions, people consume rain water. Isn’t it? Therefore, RO water, even though slightly acidic, is completely safe for consumption.

Myth : RO water filters out essential minerals and not good for health

Truth: RO water goes through reverse osmosis process and it eliminates contaminants with the help of its small pores. The pores are not intelligent enough to discriminate bad minerals and good minerals. Irrespective of what it is, RO effectively eliminates minerals and impurities. Again, is RO water not safe for consumption? Big No (again). The reason being water is not the only source of minerals. For eg: only 6% of calcium we get from water. Remaining 94% we get from our daily diet. Therefore, by consuming RO water, we will not become calcium deficient. The same holds true for any essential nutrients. Hence forth, by consuming RO water, we will NOT be deprived of minerals and nutrients.

Myth : RO water eliminates good micro-organisms of water and its benefits to our body.

Truth: Yes, water has both good micro-organisms and bad micro-organisms. It is still safe for consumption. The reason is obvious as water is not the only source of those good bacteria. We can source good bacteria or micro-organisms from our daily diet. Therefore, this elimination of micro-organisms cannot be an issue. Rather, we should think other side of it. What if we consume bad micro-organisms with the unfiltered water? What damage it will cause to our body. RO is effective in eliminating all micro-organisms and make it safe for consumption. Wherever you stay, please check the TDS level of water and then decide. If you are already getting metro water from corporate lorry or you purchase filter can water from outside, RO water purifier may not be needed. Such waters are already RO purified and then disposed to you. Also, some minerals will be added to these water. To give an example, metro water will be transported from one place to another place through Iron tube. If the water is acidic, there is a high possibility that iron rust gets mixed with the water. According to BIS standard, such water should have enough minerals to maintain the pH between 6.5-8.5 so that it doesn’t get contaminated with iron rust.
